Butterfly Moments

Butterfly Moments

Car keys in hand I leaped out of my car to step over the curb and hurry to get in line at the post office. I was anxious to be done with this over extended to-do list I had been attending to all day. With my mind on the list and not my next step I stumbled over the curb and with flaying arms barely able to catch my balance.

As I stood on shaky legs getting my bearings something fluttered right by my face! I was a bit startled but saw at once it was a beautiful huge Monarch butterfly. It was so close I could have reached out and touched it. My eyes followed this lovely flying flower land on a brilliant blue hydrangea bush.

You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.
Psalm 16:11 NLT

The beauty of the butterfly’s bold black and yellow wings against the sky blue flower was radiant like a gorgeous jeweled broach pinned on there.

Oh it felt good to see something so pretty in the midst of this busy day. I felt the tension fall away for it brought me instant joy and made me feel God was near.

I’m certain of this; the Lord will send us unexpected moments with splashes of delight to slow us down, to look around and remind us we are always in His presence and there is pleasure there.

Sometimes our life throws us off balance.  But we can be assured God will be with us and He delights to show us the joy of His love and the comfort of His company. From now on I’m going watch for more butterfly moments along the way.

Stop and Ask

Stop and Ask

Beaver Valley Country Store, sits alone on a two lane county road far from the hustle of the highway. In the summer there was a stream of traffic making its way north to the popular Victorian seaport town, Port Townsend and other roads leading to the Olympic Mountains, the Rain Forest and eventually on to the Pacific Ocean.
Back before GPS and cell phones, we could count on people stopping by for directions.

For some reason Beaver Valley Road just didn’t appear on many maps and that brought in red faced and frustrated travelers trying to figure out where they were going.

But for some it took a long time to stop and come into the store to ask for help. It was humorous to watch the same car driving by the store over and over again, obviously looking for the way to go.

For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd;
he will lead them to springs of living water.’
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Revelation 7:17 NIV

All of us at times feel lost, and uncertain which is the best way to go on a trip, but more important, our personal journey every day. Before we make any plans for our life, before we seek others, maps or new technology, it best first to simply stop and ask God for the way to go.

God alone is our most dependable life Navigator.  His timing is perfect and He’ll never get us lost! The Lord always leads the lost, when they will stop and ask.

“Where God’s finger points, there God’s hand will make the way.”

"Some Might Call Him a Fool"

Some Might Call Him a Fool

Some called him, “the fool on the hill”.  He lived alone with his aged and sickly mother in a house tucked up in the foothills deep in the woods. They said he rarely spoke and when he was around others would lower his head when spoken to looking down at his shoes.  Some had hired him at haying time for he was big and strong.  They said he was a gentle giant, a bit of a mystery.

Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the worlds’ eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God choose things the world considered foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise, and he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all and used them to bring to nothing the world considered important.  As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.”
1 Corinthians 1:26-29 NLT

I heard about him back when we owned our little country store.  But we had been there for several weeks and I had yet to see him come into the store. But one day when I was all alone I turned and found him staring at me from across the counter.

He didn’t have to introduce himself for others had described his looks to a “T”. He wore bibbed coveralls, and a red wool plaid shirt. He was clean shaven with dark brown hair cropped short and bangs hanging low over his forehead.  He stood there quietly and did not speak a word so I finally spoke first. I was delighted to see his smile in answer and for a brief moment before he tilted his head in shyness, I saw eyes that were filled with great gentleness and kindness. I sensed there was more to this young man than people perceived.

Our friendship began that very day. He would wait outside on the bench to come in the store when it was empty of locals and tourists. He often brought me little gifts of apples, a flower, and once a freshly caught trout. We sipped coffee and he shared the books he read and that his favorite book was the Bible.  He told how he had been brought up mostly on his own after his father died and his older brothers and sisters had moved away from the farm.

“There isn’t much of a farm to speak of now, but I sometimes keep a cow to graze, a few chickens and one old goat to keep the brush back,” he said.

He mostly lived off the land fishing the streams and lakes, mushroom picking and hunting in the fall. They had an old orchard with some good apples on the old trees and he would make cider and even canned applesauce.

He knew the local forest like the back of his hand. He was a great story teller often sharing me his adventures and making me laugh at many of his misadventures with beaver, bears and times he was hunting local honey.

He did handy work at the farms and haying in the fall. The locals told me you could depend on him to give you a hand anytime you needed help. Those that knew him like this said he was wise in the old ways and they respected his love for the Lord. I could tell by these stories God was using him and his humble faith in many ways.

To some who didn’t take time to know him he may not appear wise or worldly, he could boast of no great awards or achievements. But to God he was His beloved humble servant. Some might call him a fool, but God called him wise and faithful.

"Thus did wisdom publish itself in every place, upon every occasion; the well, the table, the highway-side,---every place was a pulpit, every occasion a text, and every good lesson a sermon."—Anthony Farindon, Preach, 1596-1658

Concidences and Chipmunks

Rest Awhile Photo by Dee Kamp

Coincidences and Chipmunks

Quiet and calm are my predawn mornings while I sit in my chair by the window. Here I read my Bible and talk life over with God and journal to my heart’s content. But this one morning I was surprised by the coincidence of Scripture and the actions of one goofy chipmunk.

As for God, his way is perfect: the Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.”2 Samuel 22:31 NIV

Just as those words from 2 Samuel 22:31 were speaking such peace and comfort in my heart of how God is always my shield something caught my attention at the window.

I found myself staring eye to eye with a chipmunk that had just climbed to the top of the deck chair and was pressing his front paws up against the window.  I started to laugh when he suddenly startled me by flinging himself at the window!

There for a few seconds he seemed to be stuck to the glass with wild eyes and every hair standing on end. He looked like those stuffed animals people hang up in their car windows with little suction cups.  Then in slow motion he began to slide down the window and with an indignant flick of his tail he raced away.

My first reaction was to laugh. This looked like something out of a Tom and Jerry cartoon. My next thought was a bit weird; did God just show me an example of what His shield is like? That it is invisible to us but very much there when we believe?

Well stranger things have happened in my life as coincidences that I was certain to make me wonder and think upon God. I decided not discount this rather odd and humorous example for the point was it brought me back to God and the truth of His promises.

For those who believe in God, who love and trust the Word of God, the heart will see Him in divine appointments and in unexpected coincidences. These are the times God uses to simply remind us to turn our hopes, our fears, all our life over to Him. It is good to pray for His protection and know He is our shield—even from crazy chipmunks.

“There are No real coincidences in life for those with faith strong enough to recognize coincidences for what they really are: intricate pieces of the providential design God created for each of our lives” —Delia Parr, Love’s First Bloom
