Coincidences
and Chipmunks
Quiet
and calm are my predawn mornings while I sit in my chair by the window. Here I
read my Bible and talk life over with God and journal to my heart’s content.
But this one morning I was surprised by the coincidence of Scripture and the actions
of one goofy chipmunk.
“As for God, his way is perfect: the Lord’s
word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.”2 Samuel 22:31 NIV
Just
as those words from 2 Samuel 22:31 were speaking such peace and comfort in my
heart of how God is always my shield something caught my attention at the
window.
I
found myself staring eye to eye with a chipmunk that had just climbed to the top
of the deck chair and was pressing his front paws up against the window. I started to laugh when he suddenly startled
me by flinging himself at the window!
There
for a few seconds he seemed to be stuck to the glass with wild eyes and every hair
standing on end. He looked like those stuffed animals people hang up in their
car windows with little suction cups. Then in slow motion he began to slide down the
window and with an indignant flick of his tail he raced away.
My
first reaction was to laugh. This looked like something out of a Tom and Jerry
cartoon. My next thought was a bit weird; did God just show me an example of what
His shield is like? That it is invisible to us but very much there when we believe?
Well stranger things have happened in my life
as coincidences that I was certain to make me wonder and think upon God. I
decided not discount this rather odd and humorous example for the point was it
brought me back to God and the truth of His promises.
For
those who believe in God, who love and trust the Word of God, the heart will
see Him in divine appointments and in unexpected coincidences. These are the
times God uses to simply remind us to turn our hopes, our fears, all our life
over to Him. It is good to pray for His protection and know He is our shield—even
from crazy chipmunks.
“There
are No real coincidences in life for those with faith strong enough to
recognize coincidences for what they really are: intricate pieces of the
providential design God created for each of our lives” —Delia Parr, Love’s
First Bloom
