Like a Starfish on the Rock

Starfish on the Rock by Dee Kamp

Like A Starfish on the Rock

On one sunny day at the ocean I was exploring the tide pools looking for sand dollars. But God was about to show me the importance of tenacity and endurance.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way,
consider it an opportunity for great joy.
For you know that when your faith is tested
your endurance has a chance to grow.”
James 1:2-3 NLT

I stood ankle deep in the water of the little tide pool next to a house sized rock. I was feeling quite secure and completely absorbed in my search when all of a sudden a big wave rushed over the tide pool taking away the sand from beneath my feet and throwing me off balance. I was about to fall head first when I grabbed hold of the rock for dear life.

I was a little shaken but not hurt and as I pulled my hand away from the rock I discovered only inches away from my hand was huge bright orange star fish! Oh mercy me, was I glad I didn’t grab hold of that starfish instead of the rock!

I was mesmerized by the strength of the starfish and how it was able to cling to the rock not matter the size of the wave.  The rock was its life support and its endurance to hold on had paid off once again.

Jesus is our Rock, our sound and sure foundation. The Bible is God’s guide to keep us from being washed away with life’s constant and unpredictable waves of trials and shifting sands of life.
God can even use a star fish to teach one an important life lesson in faith. Our Rock, Jesus, is always within our reach. With each trail we face we must hold fast to Him and spiritual muscles will grow stronger. Our hope rises up, our faith holds fast and we are able to survive wave after wave of life’s unpredictable circumstances.
